1. Objectives
Temperature is the basic property that determines the state of a material. Various sensors are used for measurement of temperature, such as thermometer, bimetal, thermistor, optical pyrometer and thermocouple. These sensors are based on the intrinsic property of materials influenced by temperature such as specific volume, electric conductivity and radiation. Among the sensors, thermocouples are the most widely used sensors which can accurately measure temperature over a wide range in various engineering applications.
2. Theoretical Background
(1) Principle of the thermocouple
A thermocouple is a device made by two different wires joined at one end, called junction end or measuring end. The two wires are called thermoelements or legs of the thermocouple: the two thermoelements are distnguished as positive and negative ones.
